Women porters at Leicester Central Station
Two women porters at work on the platform of Leicester Central Station, circa 1920. As with so many industries, before the demands of the First World War created such an enormous shortfall in the male workforce, it was unusual for women to be employed on the railways. The identity of the lady on the left is unknown but a kind reader has identified the lady on the right of the photograph as being Lucy Lount, the cousin of her father. See on Route Map
