Cutting showing position of Dunton Bassett tunnel
A reverse view of the scene shown in 'Newton - E 1/6', but taken much earlier in the construction. The view shows the recently excavated cutting, and future site of Dunton Bassett tunnel. The northern portal of the tunnel would eventually be built in the rock shown in the middle distance. The wooden frame providing access to the shaft (shown in Newton - E 1/7) can be seen below the tree in the centre of the picture. The cutting sides have still to be levelled and dressed, and at this stage, only a contractor's line lay on the formation. Note the water tower on the skyline. This section of the railway was built by Topham, Jones & Railton between 1894 and 1899. See on Route Map
