Tunnel shaft at Dunton Bassett

S. W. A. Newton's notes have this location as 'Dunton tunnel shaft (north end)', and the image was indeed captured above the northern portal of Dunton Bassett tunnel. The wooden structure provides a frame for access to the tunnel - both for workers and equipment. A ladder can be seen emerging from the top, but winches and pulleys could be positioned over the shaft to raise and lower tools and materials. The tunnel was constructed by Topham, Jones & Railton who built this section of the railway between Aylestone and Rugby. See on Route Map
