Cutting north of Dunton Bassett tunnel

This long distance view of the cutting, north of Dunton Bassett tunnel shows the London Extension in the final stages of construction. The cutting sides are clear and smooth, and even the telegraph poles are in place on the right-hand cutting wall. The track bed has been prepared and the drains can be clearly seen in the right foreground. The 'down' line on the left appears to be complete, while the 'up' line is still under construction. Note the piles if sleepers in the foreground. S. W. A. Newton would have been standing above the northern portal of the tunnel to get this shot. The line through Dunton Bassett was part of Contract No. 3 (Aylestone to Rugby) built by Topham, Jones & Railton between 1894 and 1899. See on Route Map
