Steam powered excavator and navvies

Steam powered excavator or steam shovel at work in Marylebone, London, circa 1897. The London Extension was the first large scale Railway project to employ these machines. Note the two policemen standing by the fence, and the crude metal shelter built onto the excavator to provide a small amount of comfort for the navvies inside. J.T. Firbank of London Bridge was the contractor responsible for constructing this section of the Railway (Contract No.7).
