Construction of a ventilation shaft at St. Johns Wood, London
The top of an unfinished ventilation shaft at St. Johns Wood, London, circa 1897. Shafts such as this were built above the railway tunnels to allow the steam and smoke from the engines to escape. The photograph is a fine illustration of just how much land and property the Rail company needed to buy and demolish before the Line's construction could proceed. J. T. Firbank of London Bridge was the contractor responsible for building this section of the Railway (Contract No. 7).
