Navvies having lunch

Four navvies having lunch in a turf hut, circa 1897. The photograph is believed to have been taken at Helmdon, Northamptonshire, part of Contract No. 5 (Woodford to Brackley built by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne). The image is a fascinating example of how the navvies put the huge quantities of earth moved during the Railway's construction to good use.
