Cutting near tunnel, Dunton Bassett, Leicestershire

Tracks being laid in a cutting at the south end of 'Dunton Bassett tunnel', Leicestershire, circa 1897 (S. W. A. Newton's notes). The tracks are not the permanent way, but temporary rails laid by the contractor. Note the steep sides to the cutting made by the steam powered excavators. This scene was captured on Contract No. 3 (Aylestone to Rugby), built by Topham, Jones and Railton.
