Navvies at work on a tip bank

'Navvies trimming bank' (S. W. A. Newton's notes) at Swithland, Leicestershire, circa 1897. During the Railway's construction, huge quantities of earth would be excavated from cuttings and used to build embankments. The tracks in the foreground are temporary rails laid by the contractor, in this case Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton.
