Tunnel opening between Marlborough Road and Boundary Road, London

This highly detailed photograph shows the top of the tunnel opening between Marlborough Road and Boundary Road, just outside Marylebone Station. The tunnel would have been built by the 'cut & cover' method as opposed to being bored out. A temporary contractor's railway has been laid aver the top of the tunnel, and a steam crane or steam shovel can be seen at work. The contractor's rails do not look sturdy enough to take the weight of the crane/shovel. It looks as if someone had just 'downed tools' before the photograph was taken. This section of line formed part of Contract No. 7 (Canfield Place to Marylebone) and was built by J. T. Firbank of London Bridge.
