Steam Crane
Another view showing the construction of Contract No. 7 (Canfield Place to Marylebone), built between 1894 and 1898 by J. T. Firbank of London Bridge. This view shows a steam crane in use in 'Albion Road/Fairfax Roads' (S. W. A. Newton's notes), with a large house in the background. A group of nine navvies stand beside the crane, three of which are almost hidden in the ramshackle shelter that surrounds the crane's boiler. These shelters or cabins were often built by the navvies themselves out of anything they could get their hands on - in this case wood, but sometimes corrugated iron. The crane's hook can be seen in blurred motion swinging on the right. Note the piles of logs and wood that litter the ground.
