Steam crane in wood yard, London
Contractor's steam powered crane at work at a wood yard in London, circa 1897. The 'home made' wooden cab designed to increase the comfort of the crew is a fascinating example of this typical modification. Unsurprisingly, the contractor's wood pile transformed into a makeshift track bed for the machine does not look terribly secure. J. T. Firbank of London Bridge was the contractor responsible for building this section of the Railway. See on Route Map
