GCR main line near Birstall

Photograph showing the newly completed main line and embankment near Birstall, showing in detail the rails and sleepers. In the background, according to S. W. A. Newton's notes, is a 'Wood, first wood on right south of Bridle Road - Thurcaston to Rothley'. This section of the railway formed part of Contract No. 2 (East Leake to Aylestone) built by Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton, and now forms part of the preserved Great Central Railway. Judging by the lack of leaves on the trees, the picture was taken in midwinter - circa 1900.
