Steam Excavator
A large steam powered excavation shovel, commonly known as a 'Steam Navvy', shown working on a shallow track bed near Woodford & Byfield, Northamptonshire. The shovel was used by T Oliver & Sons as part of Contract No. 4 (Rugby to Woodford). The shovel is housed inside a 'makeshift' wooden shell. Also in the photograph, taken c1897, is a four wheeled 'Thomas Oliver Contractors' freight wagon carrying a large steel tank.
