Derrick in Contractors Yard
A scotch derrick used for lifting and moving heavy concrete slabs used as capping stones. The photograph, believed to be taken c1897, was taken in a contractor's yard, probably belonging to Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne. A group of labourers are shown in the photograph, one of them sitting on a pile of completed slabs (presumable awaiting delivery to the construction site). Also in the picture are two stone masons (dressed in waistcoats and shirtsleeves) with hammers and chisels in hand.
