Navvies with Spades

A gang of eight navvy labourers, complete with shovels and spades, working on the construction of the Calvert Station in Buckinghamshire. The line and station were built as part of Contract No. 6 (Brackley - Quainton Road) awarded to Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne. Taken c1897, the photograph shows the road bridge at the station as complete but the construction of the track bed still has a considerable amount of work remaining. Seen in the top right of the scene is the gang foreman, looking down very grandly upon his team.
