Contractors' 0-4-0 saddletank locomotive, ABERDEEN.

Manning Wardle & Co. 'F' class 0-4-0 saddletank, ABERDEEN, No. 1014 of 1887. According to S. W. A. Newton's own notes, the photograph was taken at Loughborough when working on Contract No. 2 (East Leake to Aylestone) between 1894 and 1899. This section of the railway was built by Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton. Behind the locomotive is a wooden water tower, suggesting that this is the contractor's yard. The driver stands on the footplate behind the spectacle plate, while the fireman stands on the front buffer beam. See on Route Map
