L3076. Mr. T. Blagden poses with his family beside their navvy hut at Hilmorton Road, Rugby. Dwellings such as this were erected by the contractors, in this case Thomas Oliver & Son, to house their employees at work on the Last Main Line. The huts were simple and would not have lasted long after the railway was completed, but nonetheless they offered the navvy communities a relatively decent level of accommodation. Indeed, many came with small pieces of land on which the navvies could grow their own food.
