L2894. This photograph was taken in 1897, and shows the brick arch overbridge which lay at the head of the Great Central Station at Brackley. In common with most other stops on the London Extension, Brackley was built to the familiar island platform design. It was however, unique, as the platform was not reached by a staircase leading down from the centre of the bridge, but from a footbridge that spanned the down line. Moreover, the booking hall was built on an embankment overlooking the line, rather than on the platform itself. Note the steam engine at the centre of the picture: this would have been used to drive the mechanical crusher that is in front of the left arch.
Despite being built to the familiar island platform design, this particular Last Main Line station was unique. Here, not only was the platform reached by a footbridge that spanned the down line, instead of the more common layout of a staircase leading down from the centre of the station bridge, but the booking hall was built on an embankment overlooking the line, rather than on the platform itself.
