4-4-0T Metropolitan A-Class locomotive No. 23 at Quainton Road

Photographed at the branch line platform on the west side of Quainton Road Station, the 4-4-0T Metropolitan A-Class locomotive No. 23 waits with a single carriage before the six mile journey to Brill. Built by Beyer Peacock & Co. (works no. 710) in 1866, this loco was already sixty eight years old by the time this picture was taken. In fact, the A-Class was not withdrawn from service until 1948: a great testament to the engine's versatility and endurance. See on Route Map
