Female guard at work on the Metropolitan Railway

Photographed around 1917, this female guard of the Metropolitan Railway is changing the destination board on the side of a 1st Class car. In common with many other industries, the railways found an increasing role for women due to the enormous pressure on Britain's workforce created by the demands of the First World War.
