Great Central Hotel - Leicester

Leicester's Great Central Hotel was built by the railway company on the corner of Soar Lane and Northgate Street. Large painted letters on the roof advertised 'GREAT CENTRAL HOTEL' in all directions; to passing trains in particular. The hotel eventually passed to a local brewery but retained the name and the painted roof. However another change of ownership saw the roof letters painted out and the building becoming a night club. It was eventually demolished. This March 1977 view shows the hotel when still owned by Everards Brewery, with the Soar Lane bridge behind. The painted letters on the roof while faded, were still quite prominent at the time. See on Route Map
