Tunnel construction at Wellington Place, London
Construction of the two arch cut and cover tunnel at Wellington Place, London, circa 1897. The photograph is a fine illustration of Railway construction at the end of the Nineteenth Century. Note the double heading contractor's locomotives and the very steep cutting made with steam powered excavator. Both locomotives are products of the Hunslet Engine Co.; the leading locomotive being Henry Appleby while the other is named Hunslet. This section of the Railway (Contract No.7) was built by J.T. Firbank of London Bridge.
