Contractors' 0-6-0 saddletank locomotive, H. LOVATT No. 9.

Manning Wardle & Co. 'L' class 0-6-0 saddletank, H. LOVATT No. 9 (No. 1228 of 1895), seen when working on Contract No. 2 (Leake to Aylestone) sometime between 1894 and 1899. The locomotive's name identifies it as one of the fleet belonging to Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton, who built this section of line. Coupled to the locomotive is a wagon marked M R, in front of which stand a group of five navvies posing for the camera. One of the navvies is holding a shunters pole, used for coupling and uncoupling wagons. Note the roughly laid tracks and wooden gantry to the left.
