Railway Archive: The Last Main Line

The construction and operation of a main line steam railway, running through both town and countryside, could affect the community in many ways. On the plus side, it provided employment, links between rural villages and local towns, transportation of local goods and livestock, a source of fun and interest for the children of the community. However, it could also cause pollution (both noise and airborne) and segregation of communities as the line separated two halves of a town or village.

To help understand the impact that the Great Central Railway's London Extension had on the communities it served, we have asked the people of Leicestershire to tell us of their memories, recollections and anecdotes. The following pages recount these memories in the words of the contributor.
