Leicester Viaduct - All Saints Road
Back to the story | |
L2054. This March 1977 photograph illustrates the width of the viaduct required to carry Leicester Central Station. It shows the underside of the girders over All Saints Road which supported the tracks and the northern end of the station platforms above. The size of the bridge made the road underneath very gloomy and required the installation of street lighting, as seen here. Today in 2003, the old station site is a small industrial park and the bridge still sees regular traffic, albeit in rubber tyres. On top of the bridge, the old bay platforms can still be seen when not obscured by road vehicles. Notice the glazed bricks on the bridge abutment which were common on this section of the line.
