8F class 2-8-0, No. 48196 at the M1 bridge construction site.

Go back to the records from the Whetstone map.
L3512. During the construction of the M1 in the early 1960's, a new bridge had to be built to take the London Extension over the new motorway. Much of the material used in the construction was brought to the site by rail and stored in Whetstone Station's yard. This photograph shows ex-LMS 8F 2-8-0, No. 48196, as it waits at the bridge construction site having brought in material supplies. These William Stanier designed locomotives became regular performers on the London Extension during the Midland Region era, hauling many long and slow freight trains.
