Go back to the records from the Whetstone map.
L3509. During the construction of the M1 in the early 1960's, a new bridge had to be built to take the London Extension over the new motorway. Much of the material used in the construction was brought to the site by rail and stored in Whetstone Station's yard. This photograph shows 9F class 2-10-0, No. 92242, as it waits for a service train to pass. These R. A. Riddles designed locomotives became regular performers on the London Extension, hauling the famous Windcutters and Runners between Annesley and Woodford Halse. Beyond the locomotive is a wagon loaded with railway sleepers which will eventually be laid on the new M1 bridge.
