L3455. A steam navvy is being used to lift steel bridge sections for the construction of Nottingham's Station Street viaduct. A group of railway workers stand on a contractor's railway running adjacent to this impressive machine. They pose for Newton's lens with varying degrees of self - consciousness. Many would not have come across cameras before, and must have found the idea that someone wished to record them and their work more than a little strange!
