L3454. Having travelled north through Mansfield Road tunnel, trains from Nottingham Victoria found themselves in this deep cutting, in which Carrington Station was later constructed. The route plunged below ground level once again upon entering the south portal of Sherwood Rise tunnel, seen here under construction. Workers stand at different levels on centring still in place on the structure's fa'ade, looking down towards a contractor's line below. Part of the contract awarded to Logan and Hemmingway, once complete Sherwood Rise tunnel measured an impressive 662 yards in length, with a maximum depth of 120 feet from surface to rail level. | |
