L3008. Four men pose for Newton's camera from the cab of an 0-4-0 contractor's locomotive close to the point at which the Stratford & Midland Junction Railway joined the Great Central's Last Main Line south of Woodford. Just a few yards past the engine this section of ballasted permanent way reverts to temporary tracks. Note the temporary wooden overbridge that is visible on the crest of the hill.
