L2871. This photograph was taken at shaft no. 4 during the construction of Catesby tunnel, Northamptonshire. A number of mineral and tipping wagons, employed to bring materials to and from the site, are lined up on the temporary railway that has been laid above the course of the tunnel. For the countless men at work beneath the surface, building tunnels remained one of the most dangerous undertakings in railway construction. | |
