L2829. Photographed in March 1897, this is the brick and girder bridge that carried the Shawell to Cotesbach road across the London Extension in South Leicestershire. Running along the narrow trackbed - and remarkably free of mud - is a line of contractor's temporary railway. Note that both before and beyond the bridge, the left side of the cutting has not yet been dressed.
