L2823. Four navvies pause from their work on the temporary railway and pose for Newton's camera near Rugby. Because such tracks were intensively used in all weathers and conditions by the many wagons, locos and steam powered machines required for the railway's construction, and in turn were then quickly lifted and re-laid elsewhere, the contractor's rails were poorly maintained and were invariably set on uneven muddy trackbeds.
