L2446. A family pose for Newton's camera outside their hut at a navvy settlement near Swithland, circa 1897. By today's standards this accommodation is certainly primitive, but these dwellings were a significant improvement on the poor conditions which the navvies had endured for much of the nineteenth century, and at last the navvy could live with his family in relative comfort.
