L2396. Witnessed by a sizeable crowd eager to experience an impressive engineering spectacle, one of the steel girders of St. Augustine Street bridge is hoisted into place. Built by Henry Lovatt & Co. as part of Contract No.2 (Leake to Aylestone), the bridge formed part of the long viaduct that carried the Last Main Line across much of the city. Note the Midland Railway flat wagon used to transport the girder, and the policeman on the left observing the scene.
