Bridge 414 - Dunton Bassett Tunnel

Bridge 414 - Dunton Bassett Tunnel

Go back to the records from the Dunton Bassett map.
L1969. This is the date stone above the south portal of Dunton Bassett Tunnel. It is engraved with the tunnel's completion date of '1896' and was set in position by the tunnel's builders - Topham, Jones & Railton. Looking at this photograph taken in May 1977, it appears that the date stone has apparently been used for air rifle and stone-throwing target practice. Dunton Bassett Tunnel still stands in sound condition today in 2003.
