Former Leicester Central locomotive shed.

Former Leicester Central locomotive shed.

Go back to the records from the Leicester North map.
L1858. Most steam locomotives carried sand which could be applied to the rails when adhesion was a problem. Some sanding had to be done by hand, but many locomotives were fitted with apparatus that would sand the rails as it moved - this was simply known as sanding gear. The building shown here at the former Leicester Central shed is where the sand was dried before being put into the locomotive sand boxes. The building behind is the combined water tower and coaling stage.
