L1817. A gang of navvies building foundations pause for a moment to pose for Newton's camera. These men would have worked for Henry Lovatt & Co. of Wolverhampton, the contractor responsible for building this section of the Last Main Line (Contract No.2, Leake to Aylestone). The photograph was taken at Bedehouse Meadows, the location chosen by the Great Central for their railway yard. Looking beyond the building site is the familiar Victorian scenery of terraced houses and chimneys.
