Removing the last piece of Northgates girder bridge, Leicester

L1771. The last half of the final girder being manoeuvred to the ground during the demolition of the bowstring underbridge that carried the Leicester viaduct across Northgates. By the time this photograph was taken in July 1981, the majority of the Last Main Line had already been systematically dismantled, just eighty two years after it was opened amidst the endless optimism of Victorian rail expansion.
