Demolishing the girder bridge crossing Northgates, Leicester

Demolishing the girder bridge crossing Northgates, Leicester

Go back to the records from the Leicester North map.
L1768. July 1981, and with the distinctive iron lattice work having been cut away, cranes prepare to lift the principal girders of the bowstring underbridge that carried the London Extension across Northgates, Leicester. Initially, the plan was to lift the whole girder onto the viaduct's trackbed to the left of the picture. However, such was the weight that the smaller crane began to be pulled over. The girder fell, and even though the central support held, the fall resulted in the bend that can be seen just below the pulley block on the left.
