Demolition in progress at the Northgates bridge, Leicester

Demolition in progress at the Northgates bridge, Leicester

Go back to the records from the Leicester North map.
L1767. Diverted traffic snakes around the central screen erected during the demolition of Northgates girder bridge in July 1981. This handsome bowstring underbridge carried the city's viaduct north of Leicester Central Station. In the twelve years that had passed since the station's closure however, track lifting locos were the only engines to pass over this imposing symbol of a once proud railway.
