| L1665. A train approaches as a railwayman stands beside the water troughs near Charwelton, Northamptonshire, circa 1900. These troughs enabled a steam locomotive travelling at speed to replenish its water supply. As the engine passed over these containers, a 'scoop' would be lowered by the crew, and water would be fed into the tank. Built between 1894-1899, this section of the Last Main Line (Contract No.4, Rugby to Woodford) was constructed by T. Oliver & Son. | |
