L1541. 'Bridge stanchion, St. Augustines Street, West Bridge' (S.W.A. Newton's notes), Leicester, circa 1897. This imposing structure immediately conveys the impact which the new Line brought to the established towns and cities through which it passed. Note the doors being used as fence panels, and the two young observers posing for Newton's camera. Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton was the contractor who built this section of the Railway (Contract No.2, Leake to Aylestone).
