| L1508. Catesby Tunnel existed for one reason, and that was because the landowner of the Catesby Estate did not want to see trains travelling across his land. He therefore insisted that the railway tunnelled through Catesby Hill, rather than excavate a cutting as originally planned. Here we see the construction of the tunnel in its middle stages. The main excavation has been carried out, and the internal brickwork is very near completion. Wooden piles still hold back the earth above the tunnel and the main portal facade has still to be built. A contractor's line disappears into the tunnel mouth, surrounded by rocks and mud. Catesby Tunnel was part of Contract No. 4 (Rugby to Woodford) built by T. Oliver & Son. | |
