L1478. Construction of the girder overbridge that carried the Stratford & Midland Junction Railway over the London Extension. Bridges such as this were built by the Great Central Railway to accommodate existing routes that were interrupted by the new Main Line. The photograph was taken in 1896, near to the spot where Contract No. 4 (Rugby to Woodford, built by T. Oliver & Son) met Contract No. 5 (Woodford to Brackley built by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne).
