L1477. Construction of the girder overbridge at the 'join of [two] contracts, Woodford Halse', Northamptonshire, 1896 (S. W. A. Newton's notes). Looking north, the photograph was taken near to where Contract No. 4 (Rugby to Woodford, built by T. Oliver & Son) met Contract No. 5 (Woodford to Brackley, built by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne). The sleepers in the foreground would be used for the contractor's temporary rails, not the permanent way.
